  1. Are there any more complimentary colors for shiitake? Thanks!

  2. Wanting to do Shittake on my trim and white walls! Pure white nor Greek villa work. Suggestions???

Hello Meredith! The following subtle whites would coordinately nicely with Shitake. Look at:
      White Duck SW 7010
      Futon SW 7107
      Snowbound SW 7004

  3. Thinking of using Shitake throughout our entire great room and hallway in our Florida home. The great room does have a small divider wall in the middle that is open on both sides but divides the rooms some — the dining/living room and the kitchen/family room. The DR/LR has little direct Natural light both N and S. The FR/KIT has lots of N natural light. We’re replacing the Irish Cream that is turning our floors a yellow tone, want a more updated feel and we want slightly more contrast with our white trim. We also have maple cabinets in the kitchen which we’re not ready to restrain yet and distressed wood floors with both gray and beige in them in the LM/DR. We want a warmer look that is neutral and a nice Greige not too beige. Our accent colors are blue/teal and we have warm to darker wood tones in our furniture. Most of our upholstry is off white. Do you think Shitake would work well? Our house is transitional and we like a more minimalist look. Thank you

  4. I am painting my kitchen Shiitake and want to paint the cabinets a coordinating off white or light beige/taupe. What colors do you recommend?

    • Sherwin-Williams logo

Hi Becky, check out these options below. Any of these three off whites will look fantastic with Shitake. Look at:
      Pearly White SW 7009
      Aesthetic White SW 7035
      Everyday White SW 6077

  5. Hello. My wall color is Shiitake through all the main areas of our home, cabinets and trim is painted Pure White. Looking for complementary color to paint interior doors. Suggestions???

    Kelli Bishop
    • Sherwin-Williams logo

Hi Kelli! Shitake SW 9173 is a beautiful grounding neutral and complements many other color families. It would look good with a color in the same family but several shades darker like Dark Clove SW 9183. Shitake can also work with a saturated blue like Charcoal Blue SW 2739. And finally, looks great with a dark charcoal gray like Peppercorn SW 7674.

      Sherwin-Williams
  6. Hi! I am painting my island Peppercorn 7674, my walls are Agreeable Gray but I’m undecided on cabinets. My top two choices are Shitake and Anew Gray. My kitchen does not get a lot of sunlight. What do you think?

    • Sherwin-Williams logo

We think you should consider painting your upper cabinets Agreeable Gray SW 7029 – the same color on your walls. Anew Gray and Shitake are very close to Agreeable Gray and if those are used on your upper cabinets, it may look like you tried to match your wall color and failed. If you paint the cabinets Agreeable, it will make your kitchen look larger with a more cohesive palette. Let us know if you need anything else.

      • I’m redoing a bathroom with ample lighting (fixtures and natural). The accent walls are a blend of gray, tan, cream, chocolate and black river rock with a gray/brown grout and a wood look tile in weathered gray with dark brown accent lines in the shower. The vanity is a natural dark brown wood and the floor is shades of light gray, tan and cream. Would shiitake be a good color choice to keep the space bright but add color?

        • Sherwin-Williams logo

Hello Denise, Shitake SW 9173 is a good choice but if you are interested in a slightly brighter version of that color, check out Sand Beach SW 7529. It is always best to look at color in your lighting.

  7. Hi, doing a kitchen remodel with light gray cabinets and dark brown maple stained flooring. Would shiitake work on the walls? There is plenty of natural light, and very little wall space where the cabinets are mounted. Probably going with a white tile backsplash and lighter countertops. Thanks!

    • Sherwin-Williams logo

Hi Linda! Shitake SW 9173 is a mid-tone brown and may not be the best choice next to gray cabinets. Can you give us the name of your cabinets or tell us a color from SW that matches your cabinetry? That would be a big help.

      Sherwin-Williams
      • Hi Sherwin how about river rock cabinets. Would that work with shiitake? Floors are Gulf Sand

        • Sherwin-Williams logo

Hello Clea, yes, Shiitake SW 9173 which is a warm greige, would look great with your river rock cabinets.

          Sherwin-Williams
  8. Hi, I’m planning to paint my exterior wall with shiitake. What color should I pick for the trim and also I’m planning to to do darker color for the garage door. Thanks!

    • Sherwin-Williams logo

Hello Liza, Shitake SW 9173 is a warm neutral that works well with a lot of colors. Check out these two options below:

      Option A:

      Trim: Alabaster SW 7008

      Door: Foothills SW 7514

      Option B

      Trim: Greek Villa SW 7551

      Door: Mineral Gray SW 2740

  9. We are painting exterior of our home Shiitake. We would like to use Dover White for the trim and Dark Night for the front door. Will these colors go together well?

    • Sherwin-Williams logo

Hello Charlene, Dover White SW 6385 is a much better complement to Shitake and Dark Night as it is a warm color with a subtle yellow undertone. Ethereal White SW 6182 is a frosty blue white and would not look great next to Shitake SW 9173. Let us know if you have any other questions. Thanks!

      Sherwin-Williams
  10. See previous email. Another trim color approved by our HOA is Ethereal White. Is that a better choice than Dover White?

  11. I have Shiitake throughout my open concept living room and kitchen area. We also have Extra White trim throughout the entire house (builder color). I really want to paint my kitchen cabinets, but the Extra White will look too bright with our counters. Can I use another white next to the Shiitake and Extra White that has more warmth without it looking weird?

    • Sherwin-Williams logo

Hi Wendy, for a warm white that works with Shiitake and Extra White take a look at Alabaster SW 7008. It has warmth to it, and it works well with Shiitake SW 9173 and Extra White SW 7006 to create a cohesive, coordinated palette.

  12. Hi,
Let me start by saying I have no creative or artistic vision or skill. Just moved and am looking for a whole house neutral color scheme. I do like muted blues, greens and earth tones. We have honey colored oak cabinets in kitchen and bathrooms. We also have creamy colored wood trim and doors. Any chance you can provide a whole house color scheme? The floor plan is open-ish and there are 3 bedrooms, 2 baths. I am not adverse to painting the cabinets, just FYI. I just need help finding colors that flow and are warm and stylish. I am torn about grays vs. tans. Thanks in advance!

  13. wanting to paint my living and kitchen in shiitake. both receive a lot of natural light and face west. my upper cabinets are Natural Choice SW 7011 and lower cabinets are Dark Night SW 6237. would you go shiitake or would balanced beige be better. also need a trim that would go with whatever choice for the walls. Help?? Please…

    • I plan to paint my family room and kitchen which is one large room with the color shiitake number 9173. I also want to paint a darker accent wall in that room and was considering urban bronze 7048 or Derk clove 9183. What are your thoughts about those two colors or is there a better color for a darker accent wall?

      • Sherwin-Williams logo

Hello Mary, we recommend you stick with Dark Clove SW 9183. Dark Clove has a warm brown undertone which will complement the creamy tones in Shitake SW 9173 beautifully. Dark Clove + Shitake is a gorgeous combination.

        Sherwin-Williams
  14. We are painting exterior of home shiitake with dark night as front door color. Would dover white or antique white be best as trim color?

    Charlene Steinhauser
    • Sherwin-Williams logo

Hi Charlene, both colors would work well with Shiitake and Dark Night. Dover White SW 6385 may work better, as it’s lighter than Antique White and creates more contrast between the body color and the trim color, which creates more visual interest on the exterior. We recommend obtaining the color chip and viewing it in your exterior space and lighting situation with Shiitake and Dark Night, this will assist you in making the best color decision to complete the color story for your home’s exterior.

      Sherwin-Williams
  15. Hello, We are considering using Shiitake for the exterior color of our home and painting the front door and accent shutters Iron Ore. First, do those two colors work together? Second, what trim color would you recommend? We are looking for a darker brown recommendation and not white. Thank you in advance for your help!

    Heather Cole
    • Sherwin-Williams logo

Hi Heather, Shiitake SW 9173 and Iron Ore SW 7069 look fantastic together. Some darker brown options for your trim are Keystone Gray SW 7504 and Sycamore Tan SW 2855.

      Sherwin-Williams
  16. I am painting my house SW shiitake with SW Dark Night on the front door. You previously suggested Dover White for trim, but I walked the neighborhood and looked at houses with Dover White and realize that I prefer more muted colors. The HOA has one more option for trim and that is Kestrel White. What do you think about Dover vs Kestrel?

    Charlene Steinhauser
  17. I am painting my house SW shiitake with SW Dark Night on the front door. Larry Steinhauser
    • Sherwin-Williams logo

Hi Larry, Dover White has a yellow undertone to it while Kestrel White has a gray undertone to it. Either trim will work with Shiitake, but Dover White will look better with your Dark Knight door. The good news is whichever option you choose will create a beautiful look.

      Sherwin-Williams
  18. I am painting my main level Shiitake. What ceiling color you recommend with Shiitake?

    • Sherwin-Williams logo

Hi Amy, consider using either Shoji White SW 7042 or Origami White SW 7636 on your ceiling to create a “fifth” wall in your space. Either of these soft whites would look fantastic with Shiitake SW 9173.

      Sherwin-Williams
  19. Hi, I have Benjamin Moore Edgecomb Gray walls and want to use Shiitake Mushroom for my kitchen cabinets. Do you think those two colors will look tone-on-tone or like I don’t have enough contrast?

    Elaine Darroch
    • Sherwin-Williams logo

Hello Elaine, yes those colors are a tad too similar. Are you open to two colors on your cabinets? Perhaps Edgecomb on the bottom and a lighter color on top? Let us know when you get a minute.

  20. I am having an extremely difficult time selecting a paint for my tiny library ( with massive detailed fireplace (not strong light) and an adjoining narrow room with two large west windows. I can open a paint store with all the samples I have collected. I AM NOT a gray person … I am comfortable and prefer browns… creams… beiges… tans…. but apparently my choices alway end up having pink or gray or yellow undertones. Can you recommend some light colors ( deep creams… light browns… brown beiges) that are true to their names. When I was younger, I was not afraid of taking chances, at 70, I want to get it right… thank you so much.

    • Sherwin-Williams logo

Hi Barbara, the colors you want will all have undertones to them. Any cream will have a yellow undertone and tans/beiges will have a pink undertone. A soft and subtle color without those undertones would be Alabaster SW 7008. It goes with everything and will read as a soft white on your walls.

      Sherwin-Williams
  21. Hi There!
What are the undertones to Shitake? I can’t tell if I see some green/blue hues?
    Thank you!

    Catherine
    • Sherwin-Williams logo

Hi Catherine, Shiitake SW 9173 is a warm neutral with a very subtle pink undertone. There is no green or blue in this color. You can order a free color chip to see how it looks in your space.

    • I am wanting to paint my interior walls Shiitake what color for the trim and baseboards?

      Jennifer Carter
      • Sherwin-Williams logo

Hi Jennifer, look at a soft white without undertones like Pure White SW 7005 for your trim.

        Sherwin-Williams
  22. My kitchen table legs, chairs, my 2 doors and another piece I have in my kitchen are painted Tri-corn black. And my trim is white out of the can. Currently my walls are pussywillow with western light in the evening it looks purple?. So I want to repaint the walls, would Shitake look good on my walls? Or could you help with another color, please!

    • Sherwin-Williams logo

Hi Tami, Shiitake SW 9173 is a perfect choice as it is a warm neutral and will work with black and white. Two other warm neutrals that would also work are Naturel SW 7542 and Loggia SW 7506. You can order free color chips here to see how these colors look in your space.

      Sherwin-Williams
  23. Hi. My Living Room is painted Origami White with Fawn Brindle as the accent colour. I am now ready to paint my staircase which flows from the living room area in Shitake. Will this be a beautiful blend? Reason. I love the shade Shitake

    Gillian Johnson
    • Sherwin-Williams logo

Hi Gillian, Shiitake SW 9173 would look great next to Fawn Brindle SW 7640, it is warm and welcoming and is lighter than Fawn Brindle so it will flow seamlessly.

      Sherwin-Williams
  24. Hello, I have bought so many samples & having such a difficult time. We are painting Shiitake in our kitchen & I am trying to find a very soft, dim, not stark white that will also go with our new couches that are a nice Camel color, to paint in our living room & entryway. Trying to find a dark white or the lightest griege. Thank you

    • Sherwin-Williams logo

Hi Maggie, two colors that we would describe as a dark white/light greige. Either of these subtle colors would look beautiful with Shitake. Look at:

      Shoji White SW 7042
      Aesthetic White SW 7035

      Sherwin-Williams
  25. I am considering the following for the exterior of my home:
    SW 9173 Shitake – Siding
SW 0038 Library Pewter – Trim and Gutters/Downspouts
SW 7048 Urbane Bronze – Shutters

Will these colors compliment each other well?

    Kelly Powell
    • Sherwin-Williams logo

Hi Kelly, yes those colors all complement each other well – you are creating a monochromatic palette of every darkening shades of Greige (grey+beige). If you want to mix it up a little, consider using a saturated teal similar to Still Water SW 6223.

      Sherwin-Williams
  26. I have oak trim and oak doors (stained a medium golden-oak) and plan to use Shiitake as neutral paint for bedrooms and hallway. I think the Shiitake would go better with the oak than grays would. I read somewhere that Shiitake has taupe undertones with subtle pink – is this going to be okay with the oak? It seems like it will, but I’m second-guessing! Thank you!

    Sueann Kelly
    • Sherwin-Williams logo

Hello Sueann, never second guess yourself, you were on the right track. Shitake SW 9173 has a very subtle khaki/green undertone not pink and that will look gorgeous next to all your oak.

      Sherwin-Williams
  27. We are considering painting our entire interior Shiitake. We get light in from the south west and the floors are natural red oak (look yellow) and kitchen cabinets are natural maple. We’d like something that works with the wood tones and that is in between a beige and grey. A prior SW response noted a green undertone and NO pink undertone in this paint, while another SW response noted exactly the opposite. We’d like to avoid any pink undertone. Can you kindly advise which is the correct answer? If this paint does have a pink undertone, is there a similar one you’d recommend that might work with these wood tones and light source and doesn’t have a pink undertone? Thank you!

    • Sherwin-Williams logo

Hi Erin, Shiitake SW 9173 is a taupe color. Taupes do have a drop of red in them; however, it is quite small and may not be noticeable at all. The only way to test this is in your individual lighting. If there is any red tones in wood or furnishings you may see a subtle pink undertone. The only way to make a definite determination is to look at color in your lighting.

      Sherwin-Williams
  28. I am painting 3,000 sq foot home with original terracotta tile floors. I want a beige that will help tone done the pink/orange of the floors without being too grey. Trim and ceilings will be bright white. We are considering shiitake; is this a good choice? Is it a warm or cool tone? Is there much pink or red undertones in this color?

    • Sherwin-Williams logo

Hello Julie, Shitake SW 9173 has a drop of red in it so it may not be the best choice next to your flooring. Consider instead one of these neutrals, none of them will turn pink in your space. Look at:
      Oyster Bar SW 7565
      Stucco SW 7569
      Urban Putty SW 7532

      Sherwin-Williams
  29. Hi, I am currently working with a builder for future home and we will be doing stucco. I was thinking of doing Shiitake for the exterior, Ticorn Black would be the color for the trims, the front door and the garage door . Would this be a good color combo or is there a color that would look better with Ticorn black? Going for a more modern look

    Elizabeth Padilla
    • Sherwin-Williams logo

Hi Elizabeth! That palette is quite beautiful and would look very modern and striking.

      Sherwin-Williams
  30. I am considering Shiitake in a large bedroom. What trim would be good for doors, ceiling and trim?

    • Sherwin-Williams logo

Hello Margaret, for the ceiling we would recommend you use Ceiling Bright White SW 7007 in a flat finish. For doors and trim, consider either Pure White SW 7005 or Extra White SW 7006 in a semi-gloss finish.

      Sherwin-Williams
  31. Please help….kitchen upper cabinets are Drift of Mist and lower Anchors Away…..time to change lower cabinets And Bar ??? Maybe Shitake ??
Lots of natural light & wood floors. Adjacent rooms are Sandbeach .

    Joanie Rung
    • Sherwin-Williams logo

Hello Joanie, instead of changing the Anchors Away, consider changing your Drift of Mist instead. All of the other colors in your palette are warm and friendly, the Drift of Mist may be too cool, we think Shitake or Sand Beach on the upper cabinets would look great.

      Sherwin-Williams
  32. How does Shitake look next to Clary Sage? Not as trim but as on walls in a room flowing off one painted w the Clary Sage.

    • Sherwin-Williams logo

Hello Jen, Shitake SW 9173 works well with Clary Sage SW 6178 as they are both mid-tone warm colors and the neutrality of Shitake will really make the Clary Sage “pop”.

      Sherwin-Williams
  33. Considering Shiitake for a condo that has tons of natural light. Tile floors are darker with brown/ orange undertones. Should I consider something different? Also, what trim color would you reccommmed??

    • Sherwin-Williams logo

Hello Julie, Shitake SW 9173 has a drop of red in it so it may not be the best complement to floors with an orange undertone. Consider using Accessible Beige SW 7036 or Accolade SW 9516 instead. Those two colors are warm neutrals that will never turn pink or orange in your space. Pair whichever color you choose with Whitetail SW 7103 for a warm complement to the different finishes in your space.

      Sherwin-Williams
  34. Hey there, this is a great service! I really enjoyed reading all the exchanges. I have just tiled my downstairs hallway and am looking for a paint color to match. Shiitake is a perfect match with the tile but the hallway doesn’t get much light and I would like to complement rather than replicate the tile color. I’m wondering if I should try a 75 percent version of Shiitake or if there is a lighter version of Shiitake that I should consider. Thanks lots for the help!

    Diana Swain
    • Sherwin-Williams logo

Hello Diana, thanks for your kind words, we appreciate it! Two colors to look at from our fandeck that are lighter than Shitake SW 9173 are Sand Beach SW 7529 and Nantucket Dune SW 7527. If you want to try a custom formula, you will need to start at 50% of the original formula in order to see any noticeable difference in the color.

      Sherwin-Williams
  35. Hi, we just painted our entire open main floor in shiitake (both north and south light). Our floors are slightly whitewashed European Oak with what some say is a slight pink or red undertone, but I also see a slight gray undertone (maybe I’m wrong), and the flooring site it says the series its from are natural taupes and tans. Depending on the light it can switch from quite warm to slightly softer, cooler. It’s a beautiful floor. We had a pro suggest shiitake for the walls. We painted before we laid the floor because that was suggested to us (wish we hadn’t now). Was that the right color to paint our walls to go with that floor? Depending on the light sometimes I think it looks good, and sometimes I’m not sure.

Also, we now need to finish painting the trim in these rooms. I want some sort of white. Was suggested Pearly White, but my first instinct was Pure White. I’ve also seen suggestions of Origami and Alabaster.

Finally, we’ll also be painting our at-the-moment quite orangish oak cabinets (so we didn’t care to match the floor to them). I’m thinking of a white for the upper cabinets and something like tri-corn black for the bottom.

I’m wondering if shiitake was the right color for the floor (doesn’t look bad, I am just sometimes not sure), what white to paint the trim, and what neutral colors would work for the kitchen against both the floor and the shiitake walls. We’re into a warm (but not too warm), natural, neutral, modern look.

  36. shiitake came out a little grey-er than we hoped for in the kitchen, but we’ll roll with it. what is a good compliment, maybe lighter for the other walls near the kitchen?

    • Sherwin-Williams logo

Hello Susie, some lighter colors that would complement Shitake are River’s Edge SW 7517, Natural Linen SW 9101 and Kestrel White SW 7516.

      Sherwin-Williams
      • We painted our interior walls Shitake and trim and kitchen cabinets Pure White. We are looking for a color for the kitchen island, fireplace mantle and stairway railing. We’ve tried Tavern Taupe and Foothills. Foothills seems like a richer color but we just aren’t sure. What do you suggest?

        Esti Stevens
        • Sherwin-Williams logo

Hi Esti, Tavern Taupe & Foothills are too close in hue and depth to Shitake to make much of an impact. Look at these richer, darker versions. Check out:
          Urbane Bronze SW 7048
          Sealskin SW 7675
          Van Dyke Brown SW 7041

  37. Hi there, we’re considering shitake for our main house. Front door and garages in iron ore and trim in pure white. Good combo or what would you suggest? Thanks.

    • Sherwin-Williams logo

Hi Wynn, that is a beautiful palette but you may want to consider using Extra White SW 7006 on your trim as it is a little brighter and cleaner than Pure White SW 7005.

      Sherwin-Williams
      • So, I sampled Extra White, Shiitake, and Iron Ore on the exterior of our house. Shiitake was too light. What darker shade in the Shiitake color scheme would work? Note, we have medium and dark gray stone on the house too.

        • Sherwin-Williams logo

Hi Wynn! Some darker versions of Shiitake that would work on your exterior are:
          Stone Lion SW 7507
          Sanderling SW 7513
          Dry Dock SW 7502

          Sherwin-Williams
      • Hi, tested shiitake, pure white, and Iron Ore on the exterior house (paint appt is coming in a month). Shiitake is too light. Do you have a darker color selection than Shiitake. Iron Ore is for the garage door and main front door. Note, we have medium to dark gray stacked stone below our front main room, front door pillar, and garage door pillars.

        • Sherwin-Williams logo

Stone Lion Hi Wynn! Darker versions of Shiitake that would work are:

          Stone Lion SW 7507
          Threshold Taupe SW 7501
          Taupe Tone SW 7622

          Sherwin-Williams
  38. Hello- I am planning on painting my kitchen and laundry room Shiitake. . I need to pick a darker color for the doors and an off white for the bead board and trim in the laundry room. I have some trim in my house already painted in Sherwin Williams Creamy and I like it very much. Would it be a mistake to pair Creamy with Shiitake? Also, I noticed on a recent post that you did not recommend Foothills with Shiitake. I thought it would be a good color because it is on the same color strip. Your advice would be appreciated. Thank you:)

    • Sherwin-Williams logo

Hello there, Creamy SW 7012 would look lovely with Shitake. Foothills and Shitake are not in a regular family strip but grouped together because they are similar. You can use Foothills if you want but it is a lot of brown. Is there a different color family you would like to introduce?

      Sherwin-Williams
  39. Hi – Considering Shiitake stucco with Urban Bonze trim and doors. Can’t seem to find this exterior combo in picture form anywhere. Thoughts on this combination?

  40. Hello – I am painting the exterior of my home. It has an orangey brown brick front with intermittent brown tones. I previously had siding painted Benjamin Moore Sag Harbor with Edgecombe Gray trim. I wanted to change the siding to Shiitake. Would this work with my brick and do you have a suggestion for a trim? Thanks so much!

    Dana Henning
    • Sherwin-Williams logo

Hello Diane, yes, we think Shitake SW 9173 would be a beautiful complement to your brickwork. Trim colors that would look great are:
      Natural Tan SW 7567

  41. We are having walls in our lake house painted Icicle, but thinking of an accent wall with Shiitake. Would Shiitake work as a complementary color to Icicle? Thank you.

    TERRY ANDERSON
    • Sherwin-Williams logo

Hello Terry, Shitake SW 9173 may be too muted to complement Icicle SW 6238. Consider using a color close to Shitake but a warmer version. Look at:
      Sand Beach SW 7529
      Windsor Greige SW 7528
      Urban Putty SW 7532

  42. I painted my south-facing home walls in SW Creamy and trim in SW Shiitake, with new natural white oak floors and I absolutely love how it turned out. Home is full of earthtone mid-century leaning furnishings and paint choice perfect so far! Open kitchen area I’m putting Shiitake on upper cabinets and one of the complimentary colors, Jasper Stone or Blustery Sky – or similar – for lower cabinet and island. Granite in kitchen is a wonderful earthy sand look stone called ‘Astoria’. Waiting on complimentary color decision until upper cabinets painted; as well waiting on backsplash choice until rest is in place.

  43. I love shitake in my family room and want to paint my living-dining-foyer something similar. However, it is a very large open space with a ton of natural light. I am afraid shitake is too light and may look washed out. Any suggestions?

    Stephanie Fullhart
    • Sherwin-Williams logo

Hi Stephanie, Please confirm if you are looking for a darker version of Shitake. If that is the case, look at using either Stone Lion SW 7507 or Tavern Taupe SW 7508.

  44. Have entire hall, kitchen and large family room in Shitake. FR ceiling has a pattern of 9 trays, each with white crown molding. Wanted to accent the trays below the moldings. Ceiling is a builder neutral off white that matches with Shitake and much lighter.
Thinking of painting the tray slightly darker to accent the trim. Will Stone Lion 7507 or Loggia 7506 work? If not, other suggestions. I could just use the Shitake itself, but prefer more contrast.

    • Sherwin-Williams logo

Hi Mike! Between your two choices, Stone Lion SW 7507 would be dark enough for your eye to notice that it is a different color. Are you open to putting a color up there? Perhaps green or blue? What other colors will be in that room in terms of flooring, furniture, accessories, etc.?

      Sherwin-Williams
  45. Hi, would you consider Shitake as a taupe color? I’d like to paint a guest bedroom with a taupe, cream and ecru color scheme. There is both north-facing and an east-facing window, a fireplace on the south side of the room which would need to be painted. I have very pretty ecru lace curtains and a black iron bed. I’m trying to achieve a calm and restful traditional look. I really don’t want beige walls. Would shitake be a nice wall color, and what would be coordinating colors for trim and fireplace? Also, I’d like to paint the ceiling a color other than white. Thanks for any suggestions

    • Sherwin-Williams logo

Hi Martha! Yes, Shiitake SW 9173 would be a great wall color choice. Pair that with either Alabaster SW 7008 or Ivory Lace SW 7013 for your trim. Finally, consider using Iron Ore SW 7069 or Tricorn Black SW 6258 for your fireplace, either of these colors will make your fireplace the focal point of the room.

  46. Hello! I am considering Shiitake for my new living room (just bought the house). The trim is a bright white and the room is East facing, with a few small south facing windows. It gets natural light but we aren’t sure if it will get more shaded once leaves come onto the trees (we’ve only seen it in winter)! Wondering if Shiitake might be too dark for the large main room.

    • Sherwin-Williams logo

Hello Sarah, Shitake SW 7542 is a medium tone neutral, it is not considered “dark”. However, it may seem dark to you – your interpretation and comfort level is what is important. Wait a month or so until the trees fill in, you may be surprised that it does not feel that dark to you after you have lived with it for some time. If the color still seems to dark to you, look at using a lighter option like Grecian Ivory SW 7541 or Oyster Bar SW 7565. It is always best to look at color in your lighting.

  47. I painted my kitchen cabinets shiitake (9173) but I hate the color of the walls as they are now (sorta a drizzle color). Any suggestions on a color to compliment my shiitake cabinets in the kitchen?

  48. Hello there – I am considering Shiitake for my kitchen cabinets. I have Casa Blanca on my kitchen walls and don’t plan to change them. I have a lot of natural light during the day. I want a greige to go with my warm-toned home. Is Shiitake a good choice for me?
    Thanks,

    • Sherwin-Williams logo

Hi Michele! Shiitake SW 9173 may read too beige next to the Casa Blanca SW 7571to create a true “greige”. Instead, take a look at using either Useful Gray SW 7050 or Repose Gray SW 7015 for your cabinets. Those two colors have a drop more grey in them and would be a better complement to your Casa Blanca walls.

      Sherwin-Williams
  49. What is your suggestion for a bit warmer color than Shiitake for interior trim and 50% of that color on walls? I’d like to keep the linens/light about the same if possible.

    • Sherwin-Williams logo

Hello Jodi! Consider using Stone Lion SW 7507 on your trim and Natural Tan SW 7567 on the walls.

  50. Reading these comments, I may know the answer to my question, but here goes! I have Modern Gray on the walls throughout the main areas of my home. All trim and wainscoting in the kitchen are Pure White. I’m looking to paint the cabinets and would prefer a color that is not white. I feel like my only choices are very dark for contrast or Pure White. Do I have any other options to consider? Thank you in advance!

    • Sherwin-Williams logo

Hi Marla! You can opt to do two colors on your cabinets for a modern look. Consider doing a darker color on the lower cabinets and lighter colors on the uppers. If you want to stay in the Modern Gray family, you could do SW 7673 Pewter Cast or SW 7669 Summit Gray on the lower cabinets and then pair that with SW 7005 Pure White on the upper cabinets. It is always best to look at color in your lighting. Order some free sample chips from our website to determine which color will work best for you.

  51. I love this color, but it’s a little dark to paint the whole interior of our house. Is there a similar shade that’d lighter? Higher LRV?

  52. I have a dining room without a lot of natural light. I will be painting the top half of the walls shiitake with wainscoting on the bottom and crown molding. There is no white trim in this house, but stained wood. The dining room happens to have white crown molding but i want to paint the crown molding and and wainscoting an off white color. What color do I paint the ceiling? The other ceilings in the house are painted white but i’m concerned with having an off-white (e.g. snowbound, etc.) crown molding paired with a white ceiling. Please guide me.

    • Sherwin-Williams logo

Hello Barbara, consider painting your ceiling a color several shades lighter than Shitake. Look at River’s Edge SW 7517 or Natural Linen SW 9109. It is always best to look at color in your lighting. Order some free sample chips from our website to determine which color will work best for you.

  53. Painting whole house Alabaster (duration /matte finish). Planning to paint the base cabinets in kitchen Iron Ore. We can’t decide on a color for the upper kitchen cabinets – debating Alabaster (in different sheen from walls) – or Shitake. Leaning toward shiitake – what do you think? Thanks.

    • Sherwin-Williams logo

Hello there! You are on the right track with painting your kitchen walls Alabaster SW 7008. When you paint the upper cabinets AND walls the same color, your kitchen looks bigger, brighter and more cohesive. This will also let SW 7069 Iron Ore be the star of the show. There is no need to vary the sheen, the difference will not be noticeable.

  54. I just painted my kitchen shiitake. I got a whole gallon of origami white for the cabinets. Is this a good choice or did I just make a bad choice?

    • Sherwin-Williams logo

Hi Abbie! Origami White is a soft, sophisticated white that will complement the Shitake SW 9173 on your walls beautifully.

      Sherwin-Williams
  55. Looking for a deep blue accent wall color for our living room that will be painted Shiitake. We’re considering sea serpent but open to other deep blue’s as well that may compliment Shiitake as well.

    • Sherwin-Williams logo

Hello Kelsey, thanks for contacting Sherwin Williams. Yes, Sea Serpent SW 7615 would be a dramatic complement to SW 9173 Shitake, two other blues that would work are Mineral Blue SW 2740 and Needlepoint Navy SW 0032. It is always best to look at color in your lighting. Order some free sample chips from our website to determine which color will work best for you.

  57. Is there a SW color that is a lighter version of Shitake?

  58. Does SW Creamy cabinets and SW Shiitake wall color go together? Thanks

    Deana Linford
    • Sherwin-Williams logo

Hello Deana, SW 7012 Creamy has a yellow undertone to it and may look dingy next to SW 9173 Shitake. Which color family do you want to stick with? Creamy on cabinets or Shitake on walls? Let me know which one you prefer and then I can “tweak” selections for other surface. Thanks again.

      Sherwin-Williams
  59. I want to go light cabinets but don’t like the look of stark white. I know cream is trendy and can be tricky becaue it limits option with whites (trims, etc.). That said, thoughts on Shiitake cabinets on Shiitake walls with a dark island like Urban Bronze or Iron Ore? Open to suggestions for a light cabinet color that isn’t stark white. Thanks!

  61. Hi have Chantilly Lace throughout the home, would Shitake on cabinets look good?

    • Sherwin-Williams logo

Chantilly Lace #2121-70 is a Benjamin Moore color that is very close to our SW 7006 Extra White and so then, yes, SW 9173 Shitake would look great with that. Order some free sample chips of Shitake from our website so you can see the color in your lighting. Thanks again.

  62. Hello – I am planning to paint my low peaked ceiling in my attic room with shoji white. I wanted to use shitake on the back wall. Do you think there is enough contrast between the two to be able to notice the difference in a low light space? I’m going for a clean japandi look, but dont want all white. Thank you!

    • Sherwin-Williams logo

Hi Lauren! Yes, SW 7042 Shoji White and SW 9173 Shitake are both greiges and are several steps away from each other in saturation so that combo will look beautiful.

  63. We live in the sunny southeast and are painting the exterior of our north facing home. Our shingles are Certainteed Weatherwood. What are your thoughts on SW 7551Greek Villa for the body, SW 9173 Shiitake for the trim and SW 7048 Urbane Bronze for the shutters and front door? We have used the colorsnap visualizer and have purchased the 8 x 8 samples and like the colors very much, it is just difficult to visualize the actual colors on the house. Thanks so much for your advice, we appreciate your help.

  64. i just painted my living room shiitake and dining room city loft! Love it! I’m now looking at furnishings for living room (primarily couches). What color sofas would pair best with shiitake? (I used pure white for the ceiling and trim).

    • Sherwin-Williams logo

Hi Domonique! 2 colors that coordinate with Shiitake are Aesthetic White SW 7035 and Dark Clove SW 9183. You could go with a creamy lighter/off white color or a dark leather sofa! Both would look great.

  65. I want to paint my 16-year old daughter’s bathroom, which is also the guest bathroom (whenever we have guest). We picked out Shittake. My house is 20 years old and looking for a color that will look clean and modernize the bathroom without being boring. I don’t believe that grays will go with my house. Is Shitake too dark?

    • Sherwin-Williams logo

Hello! Shiitake SW 9173 is a mid-tone neutral and not considered a dark color; however, that being said, darkness of hue is usually a personal preference. If you feel that Shiitake is too dark, consider using River’s Edge SW 7517 which is one shade lighter.

      Sherwin-Williams
  66. Hi we are doing a Kitchen reno and have decided that we are doing Shiitake for the cabinets. We will have white counter tops. We were thinking white for walls but not sure if that would work. Do you have a suggestion for the paint for the walls with the Shiitake color cabinets?

    • Sherwin-Williams logo

Hi Alex! If you are open to it, consider painting just your lower cabinets Shiitake SW 9173 and then painting your upper cabinets AND kitchen wall a soft white like either Pure White SW 7005 or Origami White SW 7636. Painting your kitchen walls the same color as your upper cabinets makes your kitchen look bigger and brighter with a more cohesive palette. It also a good way to introduce color without overwhelming your space.

  67. I am painting my living room Shitake. I need to find a complimentary color to paint by fireplace. My kitchen is pale yellow. What darker color would look good next to shitake?

  68. I have a traditional style home and furnishings that I’m trying to update. I now have white quartz countertops and brushed gold light fixtures. I love shiitake and used it for accent walls in my breakfast nook. I want to have my cherry cabinets painted. What is a good white to go with my shiitake walls? I plan to use the same white on the baseboards, crown moldings and door trim. Also, it’s an open concept floor plan and I would like to paint the rest of the rooms a creamy color that will pair nicely with the shiitake and give a nice contrast with the white trim and cabinets. Any suggestions would be appreciated; thank you in advance!

    • Sherwin-Williams logo

Dorthey, Here are color suggestions for your cabinets and walls.
Cabinet Colors: Pure White #SW7005 and Creamy #SW7012
Wall Colors: Alabaster #SW7008 and Shell White #SW8917

      Sherwin-Williams
  69. I have alabaster upper and lower kitchen cabinets and at ease solider on my island. Need a wall color for the open concept living room/kitchen and was thinking of Shiitake. Also, what color white should I use for the ceiling, trim and doors? This is a big job and I really want to get it right the first time, thanks for you help!

  70. My home is completely open concept across the dining, living, family, and kitchen spaces. That said, I am currently considering using Shiitake as my primary house color and in the kitchen doing dover white cabinets w/brass pulls. I also plan to accent with black metals in furniture (such as chair legs) and lighting fixtures and other accessories.

Do you have any concerns with mixing shiitake and dover in this way/recommend any alternatives? Other wall colors I am considering (inclusive or exclusive of dover for cabinets) include Taupe of the Morning and Shoji White, but I am concerned about them pulling yellow.

Additionally, do you recommend painting the whole house a color like shiitake or picking a different color for bedrooms, bathrooms, laundry rooms etc?

    • Sherwin-Williams logo

Hello Amber, the neutrals you referenced will not pull yellow; however, Dover White SW 6385 is a light yellow and does not read as a white in most lighting. For that reason, consider switching the Dover White out to one of the clean, crisp whites below. These whites will work with any of the colors you listed. Finally, yes, open concept homes are usually one color – it adds to the spacious, cohesive look of open concept. Check out these whites for your home:
      Pure White SW 7005
      White Snow SW 9541
      Extra White SW 7006
Order some free chips of your color(s) from our site. It is very important to look at the color in your lighting.
